Chiropractic Care

Our Chiropractic Techniques

At VanDehey Chiropractic Health Center, we use a number of highly-effective adjusting approaches to help improve spinal biomechanics and reduce nervous system interference. The approach we use is based on our clinical judgment and years of experience.

The primary adjusting techniques we use are outlined below.

Palmer Package

We’re experts on a wide range of effective adjusting approaches taught at the Palmer College of Chiropractic, the birthplace of chiropractic.

Activator Methods®

This is a system of spinal evaluation combined with a handheld adjusting instrument that delivers a consistent, low-force thrust.

Columbia Technique

A traditional, highly specific technique, especially helpful with hypomobile (“stuck”) subluxations.

Insight Subluxation Station

We offer exciting state-of-the-art technology called the Insight Subluxation Station certified by the Space Foundation and used by professional sports teams and NASA. We are the only office in the area with this equipment to assess and show our patients exactly where their health challenges are.

This sophisticated combination of chiropractic techniques allows Dr. VanDehey to correct interference to your nervous system, changing and adapting as your body changes and adapts. You are checked for Vertebral Subluxation Complex, and subluxations in your extremities, at every visit. You receive a comprehensive check, what we call your Progressive Exam, about every twelve visits, to determine, objectively (scientifically) how you are progressing.

More About the Palmer Package

The Palmer Package is a variety of techniques taught at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, the birthplace of chiropractic in 1895.

The main techniques include:

Diversified: First, an analysis of your spine is performed. With the malposition of one or more spinal bones identified, a specific manual thrust is administered, based on experience, practice and a thorough understanding of spinal mechanics.

Thompson: This technique is both a system of chiropractic analysis and a way to minimize the amount of energy needed to adjust the spine using a special table with drop-away sections.

Gonstead: A small heat-sensing instrument and full spine X-rays may be used to reveal vertebral subluxation patterns in the spine. To adjust your lower spine and pelvis, we’ll have you lie on your side. Vertebral Subluxations in the middle back are corrected as you assume a comfortable kneeling position. When you’re seated, we can restore the integrity of your spine without twisting or rotating your neck.

Toggle Recoil: While you’re in a totally relaxed state, usually lying on your side, a high-speed, low-force thrust is delivered to the upper bones of your spine and the hands are quickly withdrawn. This allows the body to use the energy as it sees fit to “reset” the spinal joints.

More About the Activator Technique®

We’re proud to use one of the most popular “low force” chiropractic techniques in the world. With the Activator® handheld instrument, we can provide precise, gentle adjustments where and when you need it most.

This technique is often ideal for patients of all ages and walks of life. Children love our “clicker instrument”, and seniors can comfortably be adjusted more accurately using less energy.

We know you’ll love it as much as we do!

What to Expect

The Activator Adjusting Instrument is a handheld spring-loaded tool that delivers a consistent low-force, high-speed thrust. It also makes the directed energy more precise, given at the exact angle necessary to best add motion to a joint.

Because it’s many times faster than adjustments delivered by hand, the body rarely tightens to resist, making adjustments comfortable and effective. It’s also helpful for adjusting elbows, wrists, knees and other joints of the body.

The best part? If you’re nervous about ‘cracking’, don’t be–there’s no popping sounds to be heard in this type of adjustment.

The Follow Up

After your adjustment, we retest to make sure the desired changes have been produced. Testing afterwards helps us deliver high-quality care and high levels of patient satisfaction.

How long until I’m feeling better?

Some patients find relief immediately after a single visit. Others with chronic issues feel better after continuous care for weeks or even months. We’ll always be evaluating your progress, and recommending visit frequency or making changes to your care plan as needed so that you experience the best results possible.

Can this be used in addition to other modalities?

Absolutely. We believe in making care custom for each patient. If we believe the Activator in addition to another method will be most beneficial for you, we’ll let you know.
